Next generation of triple action electrolytes and readily absorbable energy
Whatever the cause of the digestive disturbance (diarrhoea) stabilisation of water and electrolyte balance is vital. It is the best way to ensure diarrhoeic calves do not suffer irreversible dehydration and die. Scourproof® Extra’s includes:

Scourproof® Extra’s UNIQUE TRIPLE-ACTION FORMULATION

How is Scourproof® Extra DIFFERENT?
Other dietetic feeding stuffs must be given for up to four days before feeding can be re-started. As Scourproof® Extra helps to reduce fluid loss, it is only required for two days and calves can then be re-started on milk. That means calves receiving with Scourproof® Extra start growing up to two days earlier.

What is diarrhoea?
Diarrhoea is the discharge of more fluid than normal from the bowel. Normal cycling of fluid into and out of intestinal tract is disrupted. Considerably more fluid is lost through the intestine than is absorbed, leading to dehydration.
What are the results of diarrhoea?
What are some of the requirements of calves suffering from diarrhoea?
How much does diarrhoea cost?
Calf diarrhoea is the most important problem in young calves and causes more financial loss for the calf producer than any other problem. Calves are most susceptible to diarrhoea during the first few weeks of life. It can affect up to 20 % of all calves at a cost of up to £123 per case or £2,460 per 100 calves.
Why is it important to reduce fluid loss through diarrhoea QUICKLY?
In an animal suffering from diarrhoea, consumption of more nutrients provokes more diarrhoea. And that means the dehydration can become dangerous. So, diarrhoeic calves should not be fed milk. But without nutrients, growth stops. The only way to re-start growth in diarrhoeic animals is to reduce fluid loss and then re-start feeding.
Improves extracellular fluid, corrects acidosis, to reduce losses
The essential properties of an oral rehydration solution (ORS) are that it should:
Some dietetic feeding stuffs for oral administration in calves have been found ineffective in improving ECF volume within 48 hours. This ineffectiveness has been linked with the relative low bicarbonate concentration for prompt improvement of ECF volume.
Correction of metabolic acidosis depends largely on the quantity of bicarbonate provided, including that derived from precursors. Scourproof® Extra provides more bicarbonate than most other brands, for faster correction of acidosis.

Presentation
A pinkish-brown powder which is a dietetic feed source of predominantly electrolytes and easily absorbable carbohydrates. It includes: Carbohydrate source (dextrose) 58.51g, sodium bicarbonate 4.56g, sodium chloride 2.78g, sodium citrate 2.85g, potassium chloride 1.61g.
Uses
Scourproof® Extra is administered for the particular nutritional purpose of stabilizing water and electrolyte balance in calves. It is intended for use in cases of risk of, during periods of, or recovery from digestive disturbance (diarrhoea). It is recommended that a veterinarian’s opinion be sought before use.
Administration
For oral administration only. Prepare a fresh solution by mixing the contents of one sachet thoroughly with 1.5 litres of warm (40°C) water. Two subsequent administrations should be given at 12-hour intervals. A final administration comprising ½ sachet dissolved in 0.75 litre warm water and 0.75 litre warm milk should be given after a further 12 hours. Then resume the usual diet.
If more frequent administration is required, 1 sachet in 1.5 litres warm water should be given every 8 hours on six occasions. A final administration comprising ½ sachet dissolved in 0.75 litre warm water and 0.75 litre warm milk may be given 8 hours later if necessary. Then resume the usual diet.
Precautions
Scourproof® Extra is designed to form a thick, viscous solution when added to water. Empty the contents of the Scourproof® Extra sachet first, then add water to it. If administering by means of a stomach tube, use the solution as soon as it has been mixed as it goes viscous over time. It can easily be administered from a semi-rigid bottle fitted with a rubber teat.
Store in a dry place below 25°C. Keep out of the reach of children. For animal use only. This is not a veterinary medicine which is subject to authorisation by the Irish Medicines Board.
