Forum Animal Health - Milk Fever Pack

WHAT IS MILK FEVER?
Stage 1: Milk Fever – wobbly and potentially hyperexcitable

  • Intravenous calcium is NOT recommended as it can suppress parathyroid hormone (PTH) release. PTH is part of the cow’s natural mechanism to regulate blood calcium levels.
  • Oral calcium IS recommended as it will not suppress PTH release.
  • Oral calcium will need to be repeated to avoid relapses, i.e. Botonic Calcium.

Stage 2: Milk Fever- down
Intravenous calcium plus:

  • Agger’s Fresh Cow as soon as possible
  • Then Botonic Calcium twice at 8-12 hour intervals

THE MILK FEVER PACK
The new Milk Fever Pack provides:

  • Continuous and complete supply of readily available oral calcium to avoid relapses
  • Gives the cow extra support until her system is back in control
  • Will not turn off the cow’s natural mechanism to regulate blood calcium levels

Each pack contains

  • 1 sachet of Agger’s® Fresh Cow - supplies essential calcium, energy and rehydrates the cow
  • 2 tubes of Botonic® Calcium - create a mild metabolic acidosis to enable the cow to mobilise calcium efficiently

The Milk Fever Pack is available from veterinary surgeons.
